GREENGRASS HEY THERE, THEY CALL ME DAPHNE AND I'M CURRENTLY SIXTEEN YEARS OLD. I'M PART OF THE SLYTHERIN AND I'M A PUREBLOOD. ------------------------------------------------- They name her Daphne Appoline, both names coming from family members that should have been forgotten generations ago but for some reason aren’t. It isn’t as if the woman did anything of importance for the family. That is, unless you count being the perfect pureblood wife; which Daphne doesn’t. As the first child, and girl for that matter, she is far from a joyful addition to the family that is so desperately hoping for a boy. When her younger sister, Astoria, comes along, her father decides to let it be. His wife has already failed him two times by not producing a male heir; he will not submit himself to the disappointment for a fourth time. ****** Affection is not a concept that young Daphne is aware of, at least when it comes to her parents. The two girls are left to be raised by nannies and governess while her parents are there to teach them some of the fundamentals. To be honest, if it weren’t for her sister, Daphne is sure that the meaning of love and caring for someone else would have been completely lost on her. It is her sisters that show her the care and attention that should have come from her parents but don’t. It is Astoria who Daphne lies with during a bad thunderstorm that shakes the manor to its very foundation. Daphne reasons with herself that her parents love her, in some form or another. It is a forced reason that she never has to do when it comes to her sisters. From a young age, Daphne is taught what it means to be a pureblood and more importantly, what it means to be a Greengrass. Her days are spent learning about the family history and how to be a proper young lady. In all aspects, Daphne is as close to being the perfect, dutiful daughter that any pureblood family could ever hope to have; at least in appearance. Indeed she plays her part well, always saying the correct things and acting in the correct way and it takes her parents a while to realize that it is just that; an act. Daphne has ambitions, ones that go beyond marrying someone to please her parents and giving them grandchildren and she will do whatever it takes to achieve her goals, even if it means having to fool her parents into thinking that she is something that she is not. She has learned long ago that the best way to get what she wanted was to manipulate people; her parents are no exception to this. The only person even somewhat safe is Astoria, who, while manages to get on Daphne’s nerves, Daphne is as protective as any older sister could possibly ever be towards her. ****** On the outside, Daphne’s face is the perfect display of calm and nonchalance. On the inside, she is anything but. She is standing amongst the other first years in the Great Hall, her eyes focused on the hat at the front of them just like everyone else. It is the time of her sorting and Daphne can’t remember a moment in her young life that she has ever been more anxious. She knows that she is next in line and part of her just wants to get it over and done with. There is no doubt in her mind of the house she will be placed in; she is a Slytherin through and through. The boy before her gets sorted into Hufflepuff and Daphne fights the roll of her eyes that threaten to come at the loud clapping coming from the far end of the Great Hall. Her name is announced in the hall and Daphne steps forward, her head held high and confidence in every step. The hat is placed upon her head and part of Daphne is disappointed that it didn’t proclaim her to be a Slytherin in the first few seconds. Then the Hat begins to speak in her ear and Daphne realizes with a start that it is muttering about Ravenclaw. Her heart plummets for a few seconds before she begins to get annoyed. It may be the Sorting Hat, but she is Daphne Greengrass and she isn’t going to be denied by something that belongs in an antique shop. It is mere seconds after that thought that the Hat makes it’s decision and proclaims to the hall that Slytherin has earned itself a new member. Reaching up, Daphne removes the hat and makes her way to the Slytherin table, a smug smirk on her face and a proud glint in her eye. ****** She does well academically, earning good marks in most of her classes besides Herbology where she finds that her love for gardens does not equal into a green thumb. She almost goes deaf in her second year when they are working on the mandrakes. But where as she fails with plants, she has a special talent for the dark arts and charms. Daphne also has a talent for dueling, something that she discovers shortly after trying out for the dueling team in her third year. Her mother sends a really disapproving letter about it when she hears about her daughters activities and isn’t long after that Daphne drops from the dueling club. Friends are not something that Daphne has a large supply of, most of them seeing her as one of the Black sisters and knowing to keep a distance. Daphne’s appearance certainly doesn’t help with matters. The word most commonly used to describe her is cold and while that is one of the many fronts she presents to the world and those around her, the real reason is that she is guarded. And then there is her confidence, the way she holds herself and looks at people, giving them the impression that she is looking down at them. This is not entirely the case, but it helps her fit into the part that life has given her. When asked about her thoughts of blood purity, Daphne always replies with the same answer; Toujours pur. She isn’t the same as some of her fellow Slytherins, to be honest she could really care less. Yet, she does think that coming from a magical background gave her a bit of an advantage. After all, she grew up with magic, grew up learning about the creatures, the plants, the spells, etc.; nobody had to randomly show up to her house and explain to her that she was witch. Somewhere between her fourth and fifth year, Daphne becomes rebellious. She gets a detention once in a while for the things she actually gets caught doing and once again the howlers from her father begin to pour in. Daphne ignores them, a stance she has taken on most matters regarding her father. It is also in this time that Daphne has her first boyfriend, though in reality she would hardly label him as such. He is a year older than her and in Slytherin but he is also good looking so Daphne doesn't care that he is somewhat of an idiot. They mess around and Daphne enjoys it so much that she decides to move on to other boys. A week later she ends up calling it off with her boyfriend, telling him that they are over and done with. He is furious to say the least and moves to grab her arm, asking how she could do something so rotten to someone. Daphne replies that he should have known that the whole thing was just for fun before yanking her arm away and walking off. Rumors begin to swirl around the castle about her activities, about the sneaking out past curfew, underage drinking, and how quickly she goes though boys. When one particular Hufflepuff girl calls Daphne a slut in front of her friends, Daphne sends a nasty hex that makes the girl’s hair fall out. It earns her a detention for two weeks and gives her some satisfaction, but it doesn't stop that word from following her like a shadow. She is a fifth year and reckless, staying out well into the morning hours and doing things with people that would make her parents lock her in her room for the rest of her life if they knew. Drugs are nothing new to her though she stays away from the heavy duty ones, instead preferring weed as her drug of choice. It is also the year she loses her virginity, though the act is far from enjoyable for her. Many of her nights are spent out partying and she is unable to recall a good amount of them due to blackouts. Some of those close to her express their concerns, though Daphne just ignores them. She is young after all and just looking to have some fun. When they refuse to stop, Daphne begins to sever ties with the friends who seem to constantly be on her case, saying that if she wanted advice, she would ask for it. Not that she ever would; she is far too proud to do such a thing. |
